Best Man is a new Irish comedy laughing at the tragedy of dating in your 30s.
Created by Mikey Fleming & Colman Hayes, two comedians who bonded over their storied history of failed relationships, all whilst watching every last one of their friends settle down.
They’ve transplanted all the worst aspects of themselves (and their dating habits) into Cathal, an eternally single man who’s struggling to come to terms with the choices that have left him in his mid 30s without any dating prospects.
“Like other well-known cringe comedies (The Office, The Comeback, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Best Man follows in perfect suit.” Playbill
“Few Fringe shows can do what Best Man has done, and the sold-out run is a testament to the quality of the work. This is a beautiful play brought to life by two very passionate and gifted theatre makers.” -⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The New Current
“Colman Hayes wins the audience over immediately with his charm and charisma and maintains a high energy throughout the entire performance.” – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Reviews Hub
Debuting last October to a completely sold out run in Dublin’s Smock Alley Theatre, it then went on to have another completely sold out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, even going on to add an extra show, which of course also sold out. Fleming and Hayes, have written and performed comedy in many other guises, but this is their first proper foray into writing theatre.
“We kept wondering what have we done wrong? What choices have we made? Why can’t we find lasting love? This stage play is our attempt at putting answers to those questions. Whilst also writing something we felt was incredibly relatable to anyone of a certain generation, and standing as a cautionary tale to those younger than us.” – Mikey Fleming, Co Writer / Director.
Everyone has a first love, has had heartbreak, has felt lost, has regret. Everyone has their own version of Cathal’s story. This version is an immersive, emotional roller coaster, where you get to witness a best man speech go completely off the rails. A unique show that weaves improv and audience interaction to create a tangible sense of realism.
