20th July
10:00 – 12:00
These days there is increasing interest in restoring forest ecosystems, but how then do we live with them in a way that benefits both the human and natural world? In this talk Robin Agemi shares her insights from Kyoto, an ancient city dense in culture, that has been supported by the surrounding mountains and rivers for more than a thousand years.
Learn how people co-existed with forests in a kind of natural stewardship known as the satoyama system, the challenges Japan’s forest systems face today and how we are meeting the moment. Through the lens of the watershed, hear how restoring craft and making to its place in the cycles of nature is helping restore forests and breathing a new wind into the craft industry.
Tea from Ippodo, Kyoto and a light snack provided.
